- Do you do custom work? Can I pay you $XYZ to build a script for me that does XYZ?
- No. Due to limited time and my desire to continue working on things that specifically interest me, I don't do any custom work. I suggest looking at http://cgi.resourceindex.com/ for lots of scripts and programmers.
- I have a suggestion for a script you have. Will you add it for me?
- I am always open to new ideas for my scripts. Due to the volume of mail I receive about them, though, you can usually assume I've heard your suggestion already :) I read all the mail I receive, but I can't add specific features for any individual person. I add things based on what I'm interested in working on and what people ask for. So, feel free to make requests for future versions, but I can't change anything for you personally.
- I can't get a script to work. I don't know much about CGI. Can you give me step-by-step instructions to get it working?
- Sorry, but this just isn't possible. In order to get a CGI script working on your site, you need to have some basic level of understanding of CGI, your web server, and how it all works. CGI programming isn't not simple HTML where you just need to edit a file. Making a script work depends a lot on the environment of your web server, how your server is configured, etc. Basically, a step-by-step instruction list for how to make CGI scripts work just isn't possible. A place to start is my CGI introduction. Also, there are other CGI documents at http://cgi.resourceindex.com/ that might give you more information. Finally, you should check with your webmaster or system administrator for help with installing CGI scripts on your web site.
- I saw your script used on site XYZ, and I would like to do what they did. Can you help me?
- Sorry, but I can't. Your best bet is to contact the person at the site, compliment them on what they've done, and ask if they can help you do something similar with your site.
- Would you like to add your site to our list of CGI sites? Will you add a link to our site if we add a link to yours?
- No. I don't do any self-promotion of my web site, meaning I don't list it on any indexes (other than the CGI Resource Index) and I don't seek people to link to my site. It grows just fine on its own, and new links to my site show up on a regular basis anyway. If you would like to add a link to my CGI scripts to your index, you may do so. If you would like to add a link to my site, it would be greatly appreciated. However, you'll notice that I have very, very few links (including no ads) to any other sites from my site. I like it this way and don't plan to change it.
- Can I put your scripts up for download from my site?
- No. This is something I strictly prohibit. I've had problems in the past with people putting my scripts up for download on their site, but not keeping up with the latest version. Then I get lots of people reporting bugs in the script that I've already fixed, because they are getting an old version from some other web site. You can link to my script page and people can download from here, but please do not put the scripts up for download on your site.
- You're a %&@(%$ for offering scripts for download but then not helping people get them working!!!
- Believe it or not, I get emails like this on a regular basis. At least one a day. The attitude of many people is that I should write scripts for free, put them on a web site for free, and spend my time supporting them for free. Unfortunately, this is impossible. I only have 24 hours in my day, just like everyone else. I offer what I can at no cost to you, and if that isn't enough, you're welcome to look elsewhere. Fortunately, people who have this attitude are in the vast minority. If you're in this category, don't bother emailing me. I am very efficient with my delete key. ;)
- I emailed you and didn't get a response. Why?
- Currently (11/99) I receive about 25-50 emails a day. On many days I only have about 1/2 hour to read and respond to my personal email. Sometimes it builds up to the point where I have 100 emails in my Inbox, and I just can't keep up. Unfortunately, I cannot respond to every email I receive.
